I have two book shelves. Or, at least I did before I temporarily became a nomad.
One book shelf was small, perpetually dusty, and crammed full of old magazines and books that I sort of enjoyed, but didn't change my life in any earth shattering way. People can borrow/steal these books and I won't even notice they are missing. Sometimes I keep books on this shelf for the explicit purpose of letting someone "borrow" them.
The other shelf is tall, white, and dusted much more frequently. It has fewer books on it, so there is lots of room to put framed family photos on that shelf as well. This shelf holds the books that did change my life in some way. I protect them as if they were horocruxes guarding my soul and only lend them out to people who I truly and absolutely trust (or at least won't feel bad about hunting down and demanding late fees and eternal damnation for their delinquency with my books).
These are the books that are on my Shelf of Horocruxes:
Harry Potter 1-7 (you're not suprised, are you?)
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
The Giver By Lois Lowry
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Yes Man By Danny Wallace
His Dark Materials trilogy By Phillip Pullman
The Twilight Saga By Stephanie Meyer
Blankets By Craig Thompson
